Basic Principles of Flag Design
The project welcomes new potential flag designs from the community. However, there are five important principles of flag design that you should know about before you start designing a flag for New Franklin.
These are the core principles of flag design according to NAVA.
Take Dakota's Sailboat Flag design for example, it's quite distinctive, it's pretty simple and it's very meaningful.
1. Keep It Simple. Your design should be so simple that a child could easily draw it from memory.
2. Use Meaningful Symbolism. The colors, patterns, and images of your design should relate to what it represents.
3. Use 2 to 3 Basic Colors. Try to limit your color palette to two or three colors that come from the standard color group and contrast well.
4. No Lettering or Seals. Do not use any writing or an organization's seal, as they are unreadable from a distance and on the reverse side of the flag.
5. Be Distinctive or Be Related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but you can use similar colors or patterns to show connections to another entity.
Another point to add is that your design should invoke a sense of civic pride and identity.
